Odisha, India    (Nov 2022)

Odisha has emerged as one of my favorite Indian states to travel to. According to Odisha's Ecotourism Cell, "Beaches, mountains, wildlife and exquisite culture—Odisha is a world unto itself. Spanning over 156K sq kms ... it is home to some of India's richest ecosystems. The state has diverse geography—from densely forested hills and rolling upland plateaus to beautiful valleys and gorges and one of India's cleanest, most biodiverse coastlines spreading over 480 kms. All these landscapes are rich in wildlife, making the state an excellent destination for nature lovers. Add to this ... Odisha's exquisite culture, traditions, festivals, food and ancient heritage of excellence in arts and architecture [as well as] colorful festivals, paintings, sculptures, ancient temples, handlooms, terracotta, filigree and more. The state is home to some of India's oldest indigenous people who have preserved their traditional ways of life, close to Mother Earth." This marketing blurb is best taken with a pinch of salt, but there is a fair bit of truth in it. Click through to see for yourself, warts and all.
